Welcome to the Rose Lane 4th Grade Website!

Welcome back to school! We hope your summer was healthy, happy, and adventurous! Now it's time to get back into the groove.

Here is what our classes will be working on the first quarter of this school year.

Narratives and story elements will begin the reading journey. Our year will begin by examining Tales of the Heart. We will explore how different stories reveal what we all have in common. Readings will include Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing by Judy Blume as our fictional piece, as well as Love That Dog by Sharon Creech which explores different types of poetry. (If you happen to already have these books at home, bring them in!) Students will practice comprehension strategies for both literature and non-fiction such as sequencing, summarizing, finding inferences versus explicit details to support answers, determining cause and effect relationships, and finding the overall themes/main ideas within a text.

In Language Arts, students will begin the process of informational writing. Focus will be on creating complex, compound sentences followed by proper paragraph writing. Students will create multi paragraph essays that include an introduction, body paragraphs filled with evidence and elaboration, and a conclusion. Students will learn to gather their information from a variety of sources, and organize it to create a well planned paper. Students will also begin to cite the sources in their writing . They will expand their vocabulary with synonyms, antonyms, and Greek/Latin root word studies. Emphasis on spelling and grammar will be evident throughout our writing block. As we move into November, we will apply our writing skills to opinion essays.

Math will begin with a review and expansion on students' knowledge of place value up to the millions period. Students will read and write multi-digit numbers in various forms, compare and order numbers, and round/estimate numbers based on place value. These are foundation skills needed to expand your student's ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide larger numbers with greater accuracy. It is important your child know his/her multiplication facts up to the 12's. Please practice these facts nightly to increase your child's success in math.

In Science, our year begins with a study of the characteristics of water and its effects on the creation of landforms. Students will study the many properties of water as well as its role in erosion. By the end of the unit, our kids will create a mini-Grand Canyon in the classroom!

Our students have the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Junior Achievement Program once again! In social studies, students will learn about how a basic economy works - from being a junior employee to being the mayor of a town and all the co-relationships in between. In October, students will visit JA BizTown and run the entire town themselves! They will have to write resumes, interview for jobs, and set off to work for a day! We need many, many volunteers for this event!!! Please contact your child's teacher for more information. Training is provided by JA the morning of the event before the kids arrive, and plan to be there from about 7:30-1:30

So there is your quick peek at our first quarter of school. We are excited to get to know and work with your kids this year so LET'S GO!
