We Love Our Libraries!
Our Primary Library Media Centers are home to a variety of print and online resources for students, staff and parents. Please check this website often to learn more about our research projects, to access online databases, and use the library catalog.
We are also the center of enrichment for all students. All students participate in LEAP or "Library Enrichment for All."
What is LEAP?
The Library Enrichment for All Program (LEAP) is an important component of the Locust Valley Central School District elementary school curriculum. It provides opportunities to differentiate instruction, promote creativity and develop critical thinking skills. It deepens student engagement through collaboration and problem-based learning. Students utilize leadership skills as outlined in the Leader in Me program. Multiple areas of the New York State Curriculum are integrated into every unit.
LEAP is designed to foster 21st century skills--communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking, and is aligned with NYS Next Generation Science Standards--Engineering Design, NYS Computer Science and Digital Fluency Learning Standards, AASL Learning Standards for the 21st Century Learner, and ISTE Standards for Students. Elementary students will challenge themselves through different LEAP units that fall under the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) umbrella. Unit focus will be developmentally appropriate for each grade level.
STEAM lessons follow the Engineering Design Process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, and Improve. Exposure to, and practice with, the Engineering Design Process will help students develop 21st century skills. Additionally, exposure of all students to this enrichment curriculum will build a growth mindset, encouraging students to re-frame their perception of a mistake, and achieve a greater sense of confidence and resilience. Students will grow as confident learners and independent thinkers.
Every student in grades K-5 will engage in a variety of LEAP activities and projects each year of their elementary career. Activities and projects will cover the following topics:
The Leader in Me Program - including goal setting and growth mindset skills
Technology Basics: Chromebook use, digital citizenship, Internet Safety
STEAM Engineering/Design Challenges
Project Based Research in Social Studies
Life Sciences/ Gardening
