*REQUIRED

MATERIALS *

• 1 binder (½ to 1 inch binder WITH pockets inside)

• loose-leaf paper (about 20 sheets)

• 3 highlighters (1 pink, 1 blue & 1 yellow)

• pencils & pens (any type of pencils/pens, but ONE correcting pen)

• 3 x 5 note cards (about 20)  - book report, flashcards, final exam etc.

• 1 pkg post-it notes (approximately 3 X 3)

• Optional:  student planner  (strongly suggested)

Unit 1 - Tolerance:  How do we learn and show tolerance?

• Explore differences in lifestyle / culture

• Resources:   The Freedom Writers 

Unit 2 - Life and Death:  What does loss teach us about life?

• What can be learned from terminal illness?

• How does the knowledge of death change our perspectives?

• Resources: Tuesdays with Morrie and/or The Last Lecture

Unit 3 - Communicating in Today’s Society:  What makes effective communication?

• Explore interpersonal / intrapersonal communication

• Analyze effective speaking traits (video & peer speeches)

• Communication in the workplace (business letters, emails)

• Resources:  Various current nonfiction articles

Unit 4 - Career Readiness:  How can I determine what career will give me the most satisfaction?

• Review completing a job application

• Write personal resume

• Continue exploring communication (job interviewing skills)

• Complete a job shadow & report 

• Estimate living expenses

• Resources:  Current career articles
