Summer Reading Program

New First Grade Students Entering into First Grade

Summer Reading Program

“We Are Book Scouts”

Reading aloud to a child is a wonderful way to help them acquire the habit of reading. Attached are some great recommendations from the current first grade students they thought your child might enjoy. I hope you will enjoy sharing some of the picture books on the suggested list.

Research is clear that children who don’t read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long term effect.

This summer the first grade teachers would like first grade incoming students to use the Book Scout Book Bag to liven up their summer reading options. Here is how it works.

Children need to have their name on the top of the book bag in black marker, then, they can color in and decorate their book bag.

Over the summer, try to read books that correlate with the badges that are attached to the book bag. When they complete a book of that genre, they may color in the badge, cut it out, and place it on their Book Scout Book Bag.

When it is time to return to school, bring back your Book Scout Book Bag to your teacher. All book bags will be displayed so that we can see all the great types of reading students did over the summer.

All summer readers will be recognized in early September! Have fun!
