Units of Study

8th GRADE EARLY AMERICAN HISTORY

The students will gain an understanding and appreciation of our national heritage. The students will analyze the social, political, geographical, and economical impact that historical events have had on our nation.

Major units of study are: European Exploration, English Colonization, Colonial Life, Road to Revolution, Revolutionary War, Creating a Republic, The U.S. Constitution, Federalist Era, Jefferson Era, Industrial Revolution, Age of Jackson, Westward Expansion, Reform Movements, A Nation Divided, and the Civil War. A brief discussion of Reconstruction and Settlement of the West will also take place.

Students will be evaluated with a variety of assessments such as homework assignments, in-class discussions, group activities, quizzes, and tests. The dates for ALL tests and quizzes will be posted in advance. Students are encouraged to copy these dates in their SLMS Planbook. Students should always be prepared and up-to-date on the content we are studying. Any assignment or assessment (test or quiz) can be re-done to improve a student’s learning. If it is an assessment, additional practice will be required before you can re-take that test or quiz.


Each quarter will have two or three Unit Tests worth 100 points each. Periodic quizzes in the middle of units will typically be worth 25-35 points. Homework and/or daily classwork assignments will typically be worth between 10-25 points. Tests/Quizzes category will be worth 80% of your grade. Homework/Daily Work category will be worth 20% of your grade. ALL OFFICIAL GRADES WILL BE RECORDED IN POWERSCHOOL.
