Homework

I believe that students work for 80 minutes in each subject throughout the school day and need to have well balanced lives outside of school. In addition, I know the hassles that can arise at home with homework that is too difficult and creates stress for all family members. However, completing home assignments in elementary school helps build stamina for future years and does have the power to form the habits of a responsible learner who is tracking deadlines and responsibilities. These are very important skills for middle school and high school! I believe in balance and have high expectations for students to take responsibility for their work. When assignments are given, students will be expected to turn them in on their due date and will be supported in this process by frequent class reminders and this daily updated homework page.

Benner Math: Right or Wrong Switch Math. This is what we discussed in class today. Your assignment is to create two math problems. The problems should be grade-level appropriate, not too easy and not too hard, and contain content we have done in class this year. You should use a full sheet of paper and create two math problems with answers. Your answers can be right or wrong. Put one question at the top of the page and the second problem in the middle of the page. Do not put your name on this sheet! It should look something like this:

1. 1/4 + 1/3 = 2/7 Is this right or wrong?

2. Sam had a rectangular prism with a length of 5cm, a width of 4cm, and a height of 7cm. He calculated the volume of the prism to be 16 cubic cm. Is this right or wrong?

On a SEPARATE piece of paper, you need to create your answer sheet. You should re-write the problems and answers from the original sheet and then say why YOU think it is right or wrong and how you know.

You can create problems from any of the concepts we have discussed this year. Please create two different types of problems. Here are some examples:

  • adding and subtracting fractions
  • Better Buy
  • Ratio Tables
  • ordered pairs on a coordinate grid
  • doubling and halving
  • multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of 10
  • Order of operations
  • Division with partial products
  • Using friendly numbers for example: 98 x 37 = (100 x 37) - (2 x 37)
