Daintree Rainforest Tour

The Daintree Rainforest is part of the oldest rainforest in the world and meets the criteria for a World Heritage Site. It is important for its biodiversity, the variety of plants and animals that can be found in the ecosystem.

Ms. Muller took a "Billy Tea Safari" Tour up into the rainforest from Cairns. The rainforest is north of Cairns if you are trying to find it on a map.

Crocodiles in the Daintree River

Daintree Rainforest tour. There were lots of different plants around (like the endangered and prehistoric Cycad in the picture below on the right), but we were really looking for the endangered Cassowary. The Cassowary is the bird in the picture below (that is only a statue). The blue fruit our guide is holding above is called the Cassowary plum. The plum tree relies on the Cassowary bird to eat the plum and poop out the seeds (that is the second picture above) for new plants to grow. Without the Cassowary the plum trees would go extinct and so would at least 40 other rainforest plants that rely on the Cassowary to help their seeds grow! We never did find one, but finding their poop means that they were there!

We took a break to taste some exotic fruits. The green lumpy in the back on the left is a custard apple, it's creamy on the inside and not bad. The yellow lumpy one below it is a different variety of custard apple; it was really slimy on the inside and I did not enjoy it as much!

Cape Tribulation: The location where the Daintree Rainforest World Heritage site meets the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Site

Lync Haven Rainforest Retreat has a sanctuary for wallabies and kangaroos that cannot be released back into the wild. The reddish one is a Swamp Wallaby and the other one is an Agile Wallaby. We stopped here for lunch and to see the wallabies.

Daintree Ice Cream Company: This ice cream stand is in an animal sanctuary and makes their own ice cream using the tropical fruit trees on their property. The flavors are always different and this sample cup has Soursop, Passion fruit, Davidson plum and Wattleseed. The wattleseed has a slightly nutty flavor that was my favorite.
