This Month

In The Music Room

Kindergarten: Our youngest musicians continue to explore their singing voices, with plenty of chances for solo singing in songs like "Where Is Thumbkin" and  "Mary Had A Little Lamb". We're also learning to swing our partners in our new game, Mrs. Macaroni"! We'll also be spending a bit more time in our xylophone area as we round out the school year.

First Grade: Hooray for first grade! We continue to practice singing in tune, and students have plenty of opportunities for solo singing in class with songs like "Old John The Rabbit", and "Riding In A Buggy". We're also playing songs like "Here Comes A Bluebird" and using percussion instruments to accompany the picture book "Old Macdonald Had A Woodshop".

Second Grade: Second graders are swinging their partners as we explore more country dances like "Alabama Gal". They also continue to learn more about music literacy, as we explore the concepts of meter, accents, and bar lines. Up next we'll also have new singing games like "Let Us Chase A Squirrel" and plenty of time working with percussion instruments.

Third Grade: After years of waiting, our third graders are finally getting their turn with the ukuleles! We're learning to read basic notes in the treble clef, and some simple chords and songs. We'll also keep singing and moving with games like "Big Fat Biscuit" and "Sasha".

Fourth Grade: Just keep swimming! Fourth grade continues putting together our show, "Finding Nemo". We can't wait to perform for you on May 29th!

Fifth Grade: Our fifth graders are putting together a Zimbabwean-style xylophone piece called "Mbira Jam", with some challenging rhythms and sweet-sounding harmonies. We're also exploring the dotted-eighth note/sixteenth note combination, "tim-ka", in songs like "Who Stole My Chickens and My Hens" and our old favorite, "Rattlin' Bog". Students also got a chance last month to choreograph their own dances in small groups. The results were fantastic!
