This Month

In The Music Room

Kindergarten: Our youngest musicians continue to explore their singing voices with songs like "Hot Cross Buns" and "Fais Dodo", a French lullaby. We also love to play singing games like "Old King Glory"! We'll explore loud and soft sounds too, using percussion instruments and games like "Grizzly Bear".

First Grade: First graders are hard at work singing, reading, and writing our first two "Singing Star" notes, so and mi. "Apple Tree" is a wonderful so-mi singing game, and we have started to add a basic beat on our xylophones to accompany it. We love to bring out the parachute to sing and play "Snail, Snail!" March is also a great time to move the parachute to some Irish fiddle tunes.

Second Grade: We're finally singing do, re, mi now that second graders have the full pentatonic scale! "Closet Key" is a favorite do-re-mi singing game in second grade. We also love expanding our repertoire of longways set dances, and this month we've added "The Chimes of Dunkirk", called the "merriest and noisiest of all dances"! Students are also adding some beautiful accompaniment to lullabies like "Sleep Baby Sleep", using hand chimes, xylophones, and other handheld percussion.

Third Grade: We're celebrating Irish folk songs this month with "The Rattlin' Bog", as well as exploring the canon (sometimes also called a "round"). And now that we've added sixteenth notes into the mix, we'll be playing "Chicken In The Barnyard", always a favorite singing game for third graders. We'll be practicing our sixteenth note rhythms on sticks, drums, and xylophones

Fourth Grade: Just keep swimming! For the first time since the pandemic, our fourth grade play is back on! Now that we've finished auditions and the roles have been assigned, we're diving into the music. Check out the show page for each class's audio practice tracks!

Fifth Grade: What if I told you that square dancing could be *gasp* fun? Just ask our fifth graders! We're reviewing the square dance form and learning some new dances. As in third grade, we're also singing our favorite Irish folk song, "The Rattlin' Bog". And of course we're continuing to work on our ukulele skills, practicing that tricky shift from G Major to C Major and back again. Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" is a great one to practice that G chord!
