Active Music Making: Our Curriculum

The Active Music Room

In Longmeadow, we know that children learn music best through active music-making. In music class we are singing, playing instruments, dancing, playing games, reading notes, composing, and improvising- sometimes all in the same class period! I am an Orff-Schulwerk certified teacher, and also draw upon Kodaly and Dalcroze principles in my lessons.

While I believe that competency in skills like singing and music literacy are an important foundation, what's most important is that students learn to love music! All grade levels love to play their favorite singing games, move with ribbon wands or the parachute, to use instruments like xylophones, drums, triangles, and other percussion. Younger students love to add in elements of pretend play like puppets and picture books, while our older students enjoy adding in more challenging instruments like our ukuleles.
