Jazz Band FAQs

What is jazz band?

Jazz Band is a great chance for kids to play and learn about different styles of music, including swing, rock, and Latin.  It’s a lot of fun and the kids always enjoy the chance to play a different style of music. 


When does jazz band rehearse?

The 7th grade jazz band rehearses on Monday and Thursday mornings from 7:00 to 7:40 am.  The 8th grade jazz band rehearses on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:00 to 7:40 am.  The jazz band "season" runs from mid-September through mid-April.  

 

Will my child have to audition to be in jazz band?

No, students simply sign up to be a part of the group.

 

Can my child participate in both jazz band and sports?

Of course!  Jazz band rehearsals and sports practices never conflict.   

 

Can my child participate in both jazz band and show choir or chamber orchestra?

Yes!  Jazz band and show choir never conflict.  If a student is in both jazz band and chamber orchestra, they will do one rehearsal with each group per week.

 

What instruments can play in the jazz band at Excelsior?

 

When does the jazz band perform?

The jazz bands perform three concerts per year, in October, February, and April.  They also perform at the Coe Jazz Summit in February.
