Steelyard I (August 12 - 16 2019)

During the week of 12th through the 16th of August, 15 students and Anita Thompson, (Lincoln Faculty member and Visual Art Head) went to the Steelyard, (27 Sims Ave) for the Steelyard Immersion Program. The students; 7 of which joined the jewelry class and the other 8 experienced the art of metalworking, spent 5 and a half hours each day learning about their artistic subject matter.

Within the jewelry class the students were exposed to tools such as, jeweler's saws, files, a flexshaft drill, stamps, mandrels, an acetylene torch and sulfur patinas used to oxidize and further clarify their textures and accents. Through the use of these tools and chemicals each student created a collection of their own design based upon homework and personal research.

In the metal working class each student learned how to appropriately utilize oxyacetylene torches, metal chop and band saws, metal drills, a plasma cutter, MIG welders, and metal grinders. Through the use of these tools each student created a metal sculpture based on the first letter of their name as well as larger metal projects which were based upon homework and personal research.

Steelyard II Site Specific Sculpture Course

During the following dates (April 12th, May 14th and June 16th and the week of the 20th - 24th of June 2016) the Metalworking Steelyard Graduates from the Steelyard I became the first students in this the new program which will conclude with a week of designing and fabricating a large scale piece of public sculpture for display on the Lincoln campus. In preparation for this week long intensive program Peter Brooks and I taught a pre-course over two Saturdays and one weekday in advance of the actual fabrication work at the steelyard. During the second week of summer the students participated in a pre-course. This Site Specific Sculpture class would be a continuation to creative industrial processes of metal working for students who have completed the Steelyard metalworking program. This new and exciting program would entail a week of the students designing and fabricating a large scale piece of public sculpture for display on the Lincoln School campus. Each of the students involved would cooperatively incorporate their steel fabrication techniques (welding, oxy-acetylene torch cutting, metal fabrication, and grinding.) that they have previously learned to create this sculpture. This course was open to all students who have taken the course in the past-
