IB Visual Arts

HL Yr 2/SL

This course is designed for students who are self-motivated, who want to go on to study visual arts in higher education or for those seeking a lifelong enrichment through the visual arts. IB Art HL 2 and SL students will work on developing portfolios that comply with the criteria set by International Baccalaureate, while working toward possible college credit.

REQUIREMENTS:

Students are not required to have taken art prior to enrolling in IB Visual Arts, however, it is HIGHLY recommended that students do because we will not spend a lot of time learning basic art terms and techniques as a class. It is also recommended that if students are able, to take other advanced art classes (Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, Sculpture, AP Art History) before or while enrolled in IB Visual Arts. Please understand this is a rigorous course that requires time and effort. Although class time is given to work on all 3 of the course components, in order to be successful students will also need to work outside of class time

SUPPLIES: All basic supplies are given to the students, however, more ambitious students might want to invest in their own supplies. A sketchbook is required.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

BOTH HL YR 2 and SL students will need work to be completed by the end of MARCH 2024.

HL YR 2 - Students will continue developing pieces for their exhibition, pages/slides for the process portfolio, and completing their comparative study. Work that will be submitted to IB should be completed no later than late March.

SL - Students will start the year off learning about how to curate a body of work and what a cohesive body of work looks like. They will then explore and decide how they will create their own cohesive body of work for their exhibition. Class time will be spent creating pieces for their exhibition, process portfolio pages/slides, and working on assignments to eventually build up their comparative study. All work that will be submitted to IB for assessment is expected to be completed no later than late March.

See examples and detailed criteria on the Resources page

EXPECTATIONS:

1. Respond to and analyze critically and contextually the function, meaning and artistic qualities of past, present and emerging art, using the specialist vocabulary of visual arts.

2. Develop and present independent ideas and practice, and explain the connections between these and the work of others.

3. Explore and develop ideas and techniques for studio work through integrated contextual study and first-hand observations.

4. Develop and maintain a close relationship between investigation and a purposeful, creative process in studio work.

5. Produce personally relevant works of art that reveal evidence of exploration of ideas that reflect cultural and historical awareness.

6. Develop and demonstrate technical competence and artistic qualities that challenge and extend personal boundaries.

I will be using Google Classroom to post assignments, announcements, and other useful information and documents throughout the year.
