Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic

talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one year at the U.S. Capitol.

How to Enter the 2018 Art Competition:

1. Contact your representative to confirm your district’s participation and obtain specific guidance.

2. Review the 2018 Rules for Students and Teachers.

3. Complete the 2018 Student Release Form.

4. Submit the Student Release Form and any other required materials to your representative by the deadline specified on their website.

The mission of the TAEA Visual Arts Scholastic Event is to recognize exemplary student achievement in the Visual Arts by providing art students and programs a standard of excellence in which to achieve.

The 2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards open for submissions on September 13th, 2017 and are due by December 10th, 2021.

Entry fees are $7 per individual entry and $25 per portfolio. If the entry fee is a barrier to your participation in the Awards, they will waive the fee when you submit a Fee Waiver Form.

The Youth Western Art Show is an exciting competition that enables students to express their creativity in the form of western art, while earning money to put towards their future. Students from Texas grades 9 - 12 enter their western-inspired artwork in the areas of traditional, photography, digital and sculpture/3D. Twenty-three artists will have their work presented for purchase at the Youth Auction in March. No school or organization affiliation is required for entry.

The online entry deadline for the 2022 Youth Art Show will open Friday, October 1st, and close Wednesday, December 15th.

Mail-in artwork deadline is January 15, 2022 and hand delivered artwork should be dropped off between 1:00 – 3:00 p.m., February 11, 2022 at the Palmer Event Center in Austin.

Creative Arts Competition - State Fair of Texas - Enjoy working with your hands? Do you consider yourself a shutterbug? Artists and crafters of all ages are encouraged to participate in the State Fair’s pre-fair competitions. Pre-fair competitions require entrants to register and submit pieces of art, craftsmanship, collections and canned goods before the State Fair begins.


March is National Youth Art Month and the State of Texas has been a leader in Youth Art Month celebrations since it began. TAEA sponsors a flag design contest, an exhibit of 100 pieces of student artwork, an YAM art exhibit at the State Capitol in Austin, followed by a new partnership with the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum where TAEA will host the Awards Ceremony and Reception with an extended exhibition of the Youth Art Month artwork, as well as its participation with TASA / TASB each fall

- YAM Flag Design Form - Due at the beginning of December

- YAM Exhibit and Celebration - Each year, districts across the state may submit artwork made by Pre-Kindergarten through 12th-grade student artists to be selected for exhibition in the YAM State Capital Artwork Exhibit in Austin. The exhibit will begin at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and later be displayed in the Lower Rotunda of the Texas State Capitol Building.

- Governor's Gallery - Each year, the Office of the First Lady of Texas selects a group of artworks from the YAM State Capital Exhibit to be showcased in the Governor's Business Office for one year. The works are framed by TAEA, and students are invited to a private reception in their honor.
