WHAT IS AVID?:

AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID supports LISD's CCR (Career and College Readiness) by making students high school ready and successful! AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a stepping-stone to prepare students to become competitive for four-year colleges and universities, and provide support for academic courses, including honors and AP classes if the student is eligible. -most of the assignments are done in class and/or are started in class

-this course rewards students for working hard and so almost everything we do earns a grade

-assignments done outside of class rarely take much time

-AVID homework supports student success but should not add "stress' to your child's workload

-continually check my teacher website

-have conversations about what we are doing/studying in class with your son/daughter

-look over your son’s/daughter’s homework

-routinely check online for grade updates

-coach your child on the importance of using his/her agenda well

Tutorial Times

*IMPORTANT: Students are required to know what needs to be worked upon before they come to tutorials. Time spent by the teacher looking up what each student needs is time taken away from students who are prepared and waiting for support.

There are several opportunities to come to tutorials before, during and after school. Please respect the teacher's time and make only the set tutorial times. If these times do not work, please contact the teacher for an appointment.

Grading Policy and Late Work

Grading Policy:

Agenda/Binder = 10%

Tutorial Request Forms (TRF's) = 20%

Learning Logs/Cornell Notes = 20%

Assignments = 20%

Major Assignments = 20%

Community Service = 5%

Responsibility/Participation = 5%

Total = 100%

Late Work Policy:

All late assignments are subject to a late penalty.

Late work can earn up to a 50% grade.

However, a late "Major Assignment" can earn up to a 70% if it is turned in up to one week late and can earn up to a 50% if turned in up to two weeks late.

Any assignment that is over two weeks late will be given a zero grade.
