To start our year off on a positive foot we will be exploring our community. The driving questions students will be asking is- How can we as students, show good citizenship so that we can all be successful learners?
We will look at the Leander ISD's 10 Ethical Principals
Good Citizenship
In this unit, Good Citizenship, students will learn the characteristics of good citizenship and identify figures that exemplify these characteristics. They will understand that many good citizens become famous, but they do not need to be famous to be good citizens. The students will identify the purpose of rules/laws and recognize authority figures as those designated to maintain a safe environment by enforcing these rules and laws. The students will understand the roles of a mayor, governor, and president. The students will realize that voting is a way to make choices or decisions.
Time and Change
In this unit of study students will build on the knowledge and facts that they learned in the EUS- Good Citizenship Unit. They will discover how things change over time. The students will study the lives of historical inventors and good citizens. They will explore their own personal histories and create a timeline to show the changes in their lives. The students will be able to distinguish the differences of past, present and future. They will determine the characteristics of good citizens by reviewing the lives and contributions of historical figures.
Celebrating Diversity
Students will explore the idea that each individual is a part of many groups. They will learn that each person in a group has a special role and that because people belong to many groups, people have many different roles.
Student will understand that people everywhere have the same basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. Families in different parts of the world may meet their needs in different ways, but no matter where they live, families help each other meet their basic needs.
Students will explore cultures from around the world. A culture is a way of life. People can communicate about their culture through language. A person’s religion, or beliefs, may also tell something about his or her culture and where they live.
People in the United States share customs from this country, as well as customs from other countries.
Symbols Around Us
The students will know that symbols are objects that represent other things or ideas. They will be able to identify the symbols of Texas and the United States. They will know that Americans respect these symbols because they represent our state and country. The students will recognize historical figures and their contributions to our state or country. The students will research United States and Texas Symbols.
Leaders Through Time
In this unit of study students will build on the knowledge and facts that they learned in the EUS- Good Citizenship Unit. Students will discover how things change over time, and will be able to distinguish the differences of past, present and future. The students will determine the characteristics of leaders by reviewing the lives and contributions of historical figures, and gain an understanding of how historical figures have helped contribute to our community, state, and nation. The students will use research and technology to learn more about our country’s leaders and/or create a product about the leaders.
Show me the Money
In this unit, students will understand that many people in a community, work. Some create goods, which are things that people make and sell. Some provide services, which are jobs that people do for others for money.
The students will experience how money is earned and used as an income to take care of their wants/ needs. Income can be different based on the job you are doing and how well you are performing at work. Different jobs are needed to create either goods or provide services to our community. People budget their money to help them plan how they will pay for things they need and/or want. The students will understand that people need to make choices based on how much money they have, or trade for things they want/need. People around the world use markets in different ways, such as for trade or using income for goods/ services.
Mapping Our World
In this unit of study children will explore relative location of places in our world. They will understand the purpose of maps and globes and the physical characteristics of places in their community. They will create a map using symbols to represent places and objects to describe where people live, work and play. Students will be able to use a map key and compass rose to find locations on a map. They will also identify the characteristics of places based on their physical features such as mountains and rivers.
