Grading Policy

On-Level 8th Grade Math

Tests (90%)

These will be skills based assessments. An Initial Assessment will be given shortly after the opportunity to learn and practice has occurred for each skill(s). There will be a Final Assessment for all students within five school days after each Initial Assessment. The Final Assessment acts as a "built-in redo" for all students and is an opportunity to improve the grade up to 100%. If the Final Assessment grade is higher than the Initial Assessment grade the teacher will replace the Initial grade. If the Final Assessment grade is lower than the Initial Assessment grade, the Initial will not be replaced.

Homework (10%)

Students will complete assignments both in class and for homework. These assignments will be given a due time or date. These assignments will be tracked in our classrooms. Late work is not accepted for these assignments. At the end of the 6 weeks students will be given one grade for this category.

Missed Work Due to Absences

Students who are absent for any reason must make up the work they missed. It is the student's responsibility to check with the teacher the day the student returns from any absence to determine the make-up assignments, specific dates for completing the work, and dates to complete any missed assessments.

When a student is absent from class due to illness, upon their return the student will be allowed one day for each day of absences to make up the assigned work and/or take missed assessments. Previously scheduled assignments that were due on the day of the absence will be due on the day the student returns to school.

If a student is absent due to an extended illness or EXCUSED absence (five (5) or more days) and wishes to get assignments before returning to school, the students and/or family may check the 8th Math calendar for notes and assignments or contact the classroom teacher to request assignments. *A minimum two (2) days is needed to obtain work.

There may be instances when work is needed before an absence occurs (e.g. scheduled surgery). In order to obtain this work, a parent may submit a note to the teachers explaining the reason for the absence and the dates of the absence. *A minimum of two (2) days is needed to obtain work.

Students who miss class due to extracurricular activities are required to submit missed assignments and take any missed assessments on the first day of their return to class.

Quizzes (40%)

Quizzes will be given frequently, typically within 2-4 days of initially learning the concept. If a student fails a quiz (below 70%) they may have the opportunity to make appropriate corrections. Upon turning them in they may retake up to a 70%. (Corrections must follow the format presented in class in order to retake. There are NO EXCEPTIONS.)

Tests (50%)

Tests will occur 2-3 times per six weeks. Tests will cover part of a unit, or an entire unit. If you score below a 70% on a test you may have the opportunity to make corrections to raise your test grade to a maximum score of 70%. Semester Final Exams are excluded from the retake or redo policy.

**Students who receive a failing grade due to violation of academic dishonesty are not eligible for a redo opportunity.**
