1. When is the library open? The library is open from 8.30am until 4.20pm (excluding P5). Please return books to their original location or use the returns trolley.
2. Who can use the Drop-In Centre? The Drop-In Centre is for Sixth Form students and pre-booked lessons with a teacher only. No students may use the Drop-In Centre when a teaching class is using the area. It is not available to students before school, during break or lunch, or after school.
3. Can I use my phone in the library? No, the library is a digital-free zone. Please use the allocated computer room at lunchtimes. These details are posted on the Daily Notices.
4. Can I use the library printer? No, with certain exceptions (single sheets for sixth formers). No exam papers can be printed off, or material from Math Tutor, etc. In these instances, you must ask your teacher for a paper copy. You will need your ID card to access the printer. A4 copies only.
5. Can I bring food or drink into the library. No. Exceptions may be made during hot weather, when students may bring in bottled drinks. No food at any time. Students found bringing food into the library will be removed immediately and given a strike and/or ban. This also includes the Drop-In Centre, the library's computer room.
6. What happens if I ignore points 3 and/or 4? Sixth form students will be removed immediately and sent to the Head of Sixth Form. Years 7-11 will be given a strike. If the behaviour is repeated, all students will be given a week-long ban and reported to HOY. Persistently ignoring this rule will result in detention.
7. Can I request a book? Yes, books requests are welcome, and may be purchased depending on funding.
8. How many books can I borrow? Years 7-11 can borrow up to 3 books for up to 3 weeks. Sixth form students can borrow up to 6 books for up to 6 weeks. Loans may be renewed so long as the book has not been reserved by another student.
9. Can I borrow periodicals such as Politic Review, etc.? No. You may photocopy any articles of interest while in the library. If you have forgotten your card, please ask the Librarian for assistance.
10. Can I move a chair to join my friends at another table? No. The tables are numbered with the maximum amount of students/chairs that are allowed there. These must not be moved in order to ensure that all students have fair access to a table and chair. This minor rule is also in place to encourage students to make the correct behavioural choices, and to prevent gathering in noisy groups that disturb others who are trying to study or read quietly.
11. The library seemed to have spaces available, but I wasn't allowed in? In this instance, it is usually because behaviour has been poor and numbers are being limited until it improves. Some students may have also temporarily vacated their seat to talk to the librarian, look at the book shelves, etc.
12. Must I do as a student librarian tells me? Yes, of course! Student librarians give up their time voluntarily, and work very hard to make the library a positive space for all students. Please treat them with respect.
13. Are student librarians or prefects allowed to give me a strike? No, only the Librarian can do this. However, both parties can inform the librarian of any cause of concern, at which point the librarian will consider the behaviour and may issue a strike or another appropriate sanction. Three strikes in any one period up to a week will result in a week-long ban or longer, and may also include a detention.
14. Can I bring my bag into the library? No, unless you are in Sixth Form, and then only at the discretion of the librarian. You may not wear a coat in the library either. Persistently ignoring this rule will result in student(s) being instructed to leave the library, along with the appropriate sanction or ban.
15. Bullying will not be tolerated in the library at any time. Student found intimidating their peers will be removed and the matter will be immediately reported to the Pastoral Dept and SLT. This will always result in a significant library ban.
