SHADOW AND BONE/THE GRISHAVERSE SERIES by Leigh Bardugo

Some of you may be watching the fantasy series 'Shadow and Bone', available on Netflix from April 23rd this year. Based on Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse books, Shadow and Bone is part of the Shadow and Bone trilogy, and there's a lot to keep track of. You might become a bit confused. Read this page for information on characters and locations in the Grishaverse, as well as the recommended reading order of the books. (All titles are available to borrow from LSS library).

WHAT IS THE GRISHAVERSE?

The Grishaverse is the fantasy world where the stories take place. It is a huge world filled with fantasic creatures and beautiful cities.

WHAT ARE THE GRISHA?

Among others living here, the 'Grisha' are individuals with powers that allow them to manipulate matter. This is referred to in the books as 'small science'.

Each Grisha has a particular type of matter. The Corporalki, The Order of the Living and the Dead, can manipulate the human body, and include Heartrenders (wearing red and black keftas), who, among other abilities, can stop a human heart, and Healers (red and grey keftas). The Etherealki, The Order of Summoners, can manipulate the natural elements, and include Inferni (blue and red keftas), who can use fire, Squallers (blue and silver keftas), who use air to create storms and gusts, and Tidemakers (blue and light blue keftas), who manipulate water. Alina Starkov and The Darkling belong to this category. Finally, we have Materialki, The Order of Fakbrikators, who can manipulate solid materials such as metal and glass.

Not everyone in the Grishaverse is a Grisha. In some places, the Grisha are persecuted and thought of as witches.

MAIN LOCATIONS IN THE GRISHAVERSE

RAVKA is the main setting of the Shadow and Bone trilogy. Fjerda is to the North and Shu Han to the North and South. Home of the Second Army and divided by the Shadow Fold. Led by the Lantsov family.

OS ALTA is the capital of Ravka and the largest city in the country. This is where the Royal Family and the elite reside.

THE SHADOW FOLD is the monster-filled darkness that separates West and East Ravka. The monsters are called Volcra. It was created by the Black Heretic.

KERAMZIN in South Ravka is where Alina and Mal grew up in the orphanage.

Ravka accepts Grisha and use their abilities to their advantage in military matters.

KETTERDAM Is the capital city of the island of Kerch, in the True Sea. It's a bustling trading city with a huge criminal underground element.

FJERDA is the icy mountainous region in the North. Enemies with Ravka, their soldiers hunt and kill Grisha.

SHU HAN South of Ravka and separated by mountains. A Scientific nation whose mercenaries often travel into Ravka to capture and perform experiments on Grisha.
