Overview
Social Studies for grades 7 & 8 are one survey course on the history of the United States. The required NYS curriculum is followed, with additions for local and Indigenous topics.
Materials
All students will need the following each day for class:
Binder that zips closed
sharpened pencils with erasers
Pencil case (if binder has zipping pockets, pencils may be stored in those)
Chromebook (provided by the school)
Grading
Grades are determined using total points for the following:
Classwork
Assessments* (tests, quizzes and projects)
Participation
*Students have the opportunity to do corrections on most assessments to raise their grade. The corrections are usually done as a group with the teacher and students are expected to come for corrections during the scheduled time. Corrections must be done within one week of the original assessment unless otherwise noted by the teacher. Corrections are not offered outside of the scheduled time and students who choose not to attend are not able to make corrections for that particular assessment. Exceptions are made for students with a legal absence and they should make arrangements with the teacher within 3 days of their return.
Expectations
Students are asked to come to class ready to learn and ask questions. The more curious the students are, the deeper we can dig as a class. Students should see history not as names and dates, but as a story that has unfolded. There will be a lot of class discussion and students should keep up with any work we do together in class each day.
Absences
If a student is unexpectantly absent (illness, injury, etc.), please get better. Upon returning to school, student should check the Class Assignments tab on this site to see what was done in class, then meet with Mr. Seitz to make a plan to make up missed work.
If a student has a planned absence, please bring home a Chromebook and any current materials. Student should check the Class Assignments tab on this site daily to see which lesson was done that day. Student can then use their materials, along with Google Classroom, to complete the assignments and reading from that day to the best of their ability. Upon returning to school, student should meet with Mr. Seitz to make a plan to make up missed work.
