In 1972 the National Institute of Education and the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory partnered together to develop a reading and language program designed for Native American children. This was meant to be community based. This project lasted 11 years and, with the participation of twelve Northwest tribal organizations, resulted in the production of 140 stories written and illustrated by local Native American authors and illustrators.
This program was meant as a supplement to reading and language development programs for both native and non-native students. Over eighty teachers participated in the development of the teaching manual.
These booklets and materials were made available through the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory website and may be downloaded and used free of charge if done for educational purposes.
