Commands

We use commands to give instructions or to ask people to do things. In Spanish, commands have different forms for formal (usted/ustedes) and informal (tú/vosotros) address. There are also nosotros commands.

General rules:

Any pronoun (Reflexive/Indirect/Direct=RID) go after and attached to the affirmative commands. An accent mark is added to commands of two or more syllables to show that the stress of the original verb remains the same.

Ex.       - ¿Tengo que hacer la cama?             - ¿Necesito bañarme?

-Sí, hazla.        (direct)                         - Sí, báñate ahora. (reflexive)

Any RID pronouns go between no and a negative command form.

Ex.       - ¿Tengo que hacer la cama?             - ¿Necesito bañarme?

                        - No, no la hagas. (direct)                    - No, no te bañes. (reflexive)

Subject pronouns may be used with commands for emphasis. As a rule, they are placed after the verb.

Ex.       No copies la tarea de otro estudiante.
