Journal Quality Index (JQI)

For Economics and Business Journals

Since 2014, I have constructed and maintained a quality index of academic journals in business and economics.  The goal was simple: combine several metrics used by my institution into a single index that would allow some comparison across journals.  The ranking is not a "target list" with a limited number of journals.  Instead, the list is meant to be extensive, encompassing a large amount of the potential outlets for economics and business publications.

The methodology assigns a value to each journal from 0 to 10, as well as a corresponding percentile computed within the list.   Thus, individuals can use this measure to get a sense of where in the distribution of potential outlets the journal lies.  Furthermore, it provides a set of journals with similar scores which allows people across disciplines to understand the relative rankings of journals outside of their area.  Finally, use of a single index reduces opportunities to search for the "best metric" for a journal while also accounting for variation across metrics.

The index has been updated every 3 years keeping a similar methodology but using updated metrics in the calculation.
