Brief Course Description:

The goal of Latin I is to introduce the student to the Classical World through the language of Ancient Rome, Latin. To that end, students will begin to acquire a foundational knowledge of grammar (both Latin and English), build a base vocabulary, and begin the process of understanding how Romans expressed themselves in writing and speaking. Through the study of Latin, students will also explore the many ways in which Latin language and literature have continued to shape the language and culture of our world, up until the present day.


Core Competencies and Weighting 

Upon successful completion of this course:


-1.Interpersonal Communication (40%) Learners will be able to understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.

-2. Interpretive Communication (40%)  Learners will be able to interact and negotiate meaning in spoken or written conversations to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.

-3. Presentational Communication (20%) - Learners will be able to present information, concepts, and ideas to inform, explain, persuade, and narrate on a variety of topics using appropriate media and adapting to various audiences of listeners, readers, or viewers.

Classroom Policies:


Homework / Class Work - You are responsible for making up any work you miss within 3 (III) class days.  If there is a legitimate reason for more time, you need to agree upon a make up plan with me.

Homework will be posted on Google Classroom - it is your responsibility to check.


Reassessment – As outlined in the Student Handbook


Extra Help, Reassessment & Flex Availability -- I am in room 36 during Flex and and after school by appointment.


Communication – It is my policy to respond to all communications via email or telephone within 1 school day. 

 

Plagiarism -- From the KRHS Student Handbook: Kearsarge Regional School District requires academic integrity of its students.  Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses. Plagiarism is using another’s work as your own without giving proper credit. A student will also be considered to be violating this policy if they knowingly share their work with another student with the intention of letting that student use it as their own.  


-1st Offense: The work will receive a zero and not be remediated. There will be a meeting between student,       teacher and administration.

-2nd Offense: The work will receive a zero and not be remediated.  A meeting between parent, teacher and administration and possible loss of leadership position(s).  Possible disciplinary consequence as determined at the discretion of administration.   

-Further Offense(s): Students will lose consideration for school awarded scholarships and scholastic awards. Possible disciplinary consequence as determined at the discretion of administration.   

NOTE: Any student not exhibiting academic honesty will not be exempt from taking final examinations. 


Cell Phones:  Cell phones present a constant temptation, and are a great source of distraction in the classroom.  Also, because personal devices can be used for digital communication during the school day, it should be noted that improper conduct using a personal device is in violation of the Responsible Use Policy (RUP), under part 1: Safety and Security: Hardware and Networks. Students will be asked to place their cell phones and/or electronic devices in an assigned location within the classroom at the beginning of each class.


Appropriate Behavior -- Disrespect shown toward staff, students or school property will not be tolerated.  Failure to abide by these rules will result in one or more of the following:

* The teacher will move student’s seat
* Detention with the Teacher, Teacher will call parent/legal guardian
* Removal from class; sent to administrator


Mature Content – None anticipated - I will give at least two weeks warning if something sensitive is coming up.
