Testing at KCHS

MAP (Measures of Academic Progress)

The MAP assessment is a computerized achievement test that happens two times a year - once in the fall and once in the spring to determine student learning.  Students in grades 6, 7, 8, and 9 are tested in four subject areas:  Reading, Language Arts, Math, and Science.

Fall Testing Dates:  mid-September

Spring Testing Dates:  mid-March

PreACT (Practice ACT)

The PreACT helps students gain ACT test practice experience.  PreACT reports include both academic and career indicators, providing a complete view of students' college and career readiness.

10th graders take the PreACT in April of every school year.

ACT

The ACT is a college admissions test for Juniors & Seniors; it is used to measure college readiness and is used most by schools in the mid-West for admissions and scholarships.

Juniors usually take the test in the spring.  The latest Seniors take the test is in December of their Senior year.

The ACT will be administered to Seniors in October and to Juniors in April during the school day at KCHS.

For further information and National testing dates/locations, check the website:   www.act.org.

Registration is online at www.act.org.

Test Prep is available at KCHS.  The school purchases the On To College with John Baylor Test Prep Program (www.ontocollege.com).  Every Junior and Senior has free access to the program and will be given a username and password.  Younger students can also access the program if they would like to start preparing earlier.

PSAT

The PSAT is a Preliminary SAT (practice for the SAT).  It also serves as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Open to:  Interested Juniors

Testing Date:  Second Wednesday in October

Testing Time:  8:05-10:45

Cost:   $17

Registration Deadline: Mid-September (the first 10 students to register will receive a free PSAT study guide.)

Why take?    It gives students a chance to enter the National Merit Scholarship program.  The PSAT serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million yearly entrants.  NMSC uses the Selection Index score (the sum of the critical reading, math, and writing skills scores) as a screening score.  It also provides practice for the SAT.

Thoughts:  Students that are most competitive in the process are students that are achieving at a high academic level; who have typically scored in the 98th or 99th percentile on previous standardized tests.

SAT

The SAT is a college admissions test typically used for schools on the West and East Coast.

Juniors can take the exam in the spring while seniors can take it in the fall.

 ASVAB

The ASVAB is administered to all Juniors in the fall of the school year.  Scores from the varying test sections are paired with an interest inventory to help students explore possible careers of interest.
