Stick and Mallet Collection
Percussionists at Woodlawn are strongly encouraged to begin a collection of their own sticks and mallets. At the very least, each percussionist should have:
Stick Bag
Concert Snare Drum Sticks (Ludwig 2B or Vic Virth SD1 Generals)
Medium Yarn Mallets (for Marimba and Vibes)
Medium Hard poly, PVC or rubber (for Xylophone and Bells)
Timpani Mallets (general)
From there, students can start adding softer and harder mallets to their collection to suit their needs. Professional percussionists have a huge collection of sticks in their bags.
If you purchase these items a la carte, the Mike Balter Basics series has quality mallets that are designed for young students. There are also some very stylish stick bags out there if you are looking to express yourself more personally.
