In literacy, children learn about, enjoy and use language and literature in a variety of ways: orally, visually and through reading and writing. By engaging with books and texts, magazines and newspapers; students become better speakers and listeners, writers and readers, presenters and viewers.

At Kaingaroa School we look at ways we can integrate literacy in authentic contexts across the curriculum - to include subjects like science, maths, inquiry, technology and the arts.

We approach literacy through the dimensions of effective practice:

• Knowledge of the learner (including what motivates them to learn)

• Knowledge of literacy (reading, writing, speaking and visual language)

• Understanding and using good literacy strategies

We aim to grow in our students a love of literacy, which motivates them to find out more and supports them to be successful as they move from primary school into the wider world.
