What is a school counselor?
A school counselor is someone who has a master's degree or higher who possess the qualifications and skills necessary to address students' academic, personal/social, and career development needs.

What does a school counselor do?

A school counselor develops, coordinates, and  implements a comprehensive program to address the needs of a school district. A school counselor works closely with teachers, administrators, students, parents, and outside resources to help students become contributing members of our society.  A school counselor makes connections with all students K-12 through the use of individual counseling, group counseling, or classroom lessons.

What is a comprehensive program?

A comprehensive program consists of meeting the needs and implementing prevention and responsive services to benefit all students in grades K-12. South Dakota has a comprehensive model for a counseling program that follows the American School Counselor Association national model.  If you would like to see what a comprehensive program looks like, please click the link.  South Dakota Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program.

Is counseling confidential?

In most circumstances counseling is confidential however, there are codes of ethics that counselors must follow that make sure you are safe and not in danger. A counselor needs to inform only those people who will help you in certain circumstances.

These circumstances include.

    * Disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the student or others

    * Legal requirements may demand confidential information be revealed.

I look forward to working with the students at Waubay to assist each student as he or she develops his or her individual abilities, interests, and potential so that he or she can develop his or her full potential.  Throughout this website you will find information on graduation requirements, college information, scholarships, and testing information.  Also posted are my lesson plans for grades k-8 and information about what is happening in NHS.  Lastly, there are resource sections for parents and students.  If you have any questions feel free to contact me at chelsea.larson@k12.sd.us

About Me
Here's a little bit about Mrs. Larson...
One of my favorite things to do is spend time with my family and friends.  My husband and I have 3 boys who keep us pretty busy!  I also enjoy reading; there have been many books that have impacted me throughout the years.

I have grown up in the Webster area most of my life.  I attended college at USD and received a Bachelors of Science in Education.  I taught for 7 years.  I received my Masters from SDSU in school counseling and this is my fifth year in this role.
