Reading is a necessary life skill, and it is important that we help our students develop life-long reading habits. Practicing reading is the best way to improve as a reader. That being the case, there are reading expectations for students this year.
All students need to carry a choice read book with them to all of their classes. Choice read simply means students choose a book because it interests them. ELA classes are scheduled to go to the library every 3 weeks so that students can check out books. They can have 5 books checked out at a time. Many teachers have classroom libraries that students can check books out from. Other options would be to bring books from the public library or books from home.
The homework expectation in ELA is to read for at least 20 minutes per school day from the choice book. Students can complete homework reading in Directed Studies or they should be doing this at home.
Each week in ELA, Social Studies, and science classes, students are provided 20 minutes to choice read. This time does not count towards homework reading time.
Students have been provided with an online Reading Record to keep track of all the books they read at school and home. The document should be updated frequently as students start and either finish or abandon books. The Reading Record will help provide evidence that students are reading for their ELA homework.
Textbook: My Perspectives English Language Arts is a student-centered learning environment where you will analyze text, cite evidence, and respond critically about your learning. You will take ownership of your learning through goal-setting, reflection, independent text selection, and activities that allow you to collaborate with your peers. Each unit of study includes selections of different genres - including multimedia - all related to a relevant and meaningful Essential Question. As you read, you will engage in activities that inspire thoughtful discussion and debate with your peers allowing you to formulate, and defend, your own perspectives.
Unit 1 - Childhood - What are some of the challenges and triumphs of growing up? - Narrative Writing
Unit 2 - Animal Allies - How can people and animals relate to each other? - Explanatory Writing
Unit 3 - Modern Technology - How is modern technology helpful and harmful to society? - Argument Writing
Along with the reading, writing, and the speaking & listening activities we do in class using the My Perspective ELA program, each student will need to practice his/her reading skills for homework. You will need to read from your choice book (a book YOU choose because it interests YOU) for at least 20 minutes every school day. We will focus on strategies along the way to help ensure you are comprehending the text.
