JilMac’s support for Faculty Voice in Governance
CCV is very important to me. I have been a student, my children and many different family members have taken CCV classes. We have taken classes to supplement other Vermont State Colleges & Universities, as well as getting degrees/certificates. CCV is the go-to-place that Vermonters go to when they have to learn a new skill or receive training, certificates or degrees.
Since I began teaching for CCV in 1985 and over the many decades, things have evolved, CCV has grown and the importance of individual teachers has faded. Although I have been involved with many CCV committees – these committees are driven by the administration goals, and not specifically directed at how to make learning more efficient for all students.
Fifty percent of CCV classes are now taught on-line, and many degrees can be obtained wholly on-Line and are advertised as such. Yet when students and teachers need help in their on-Line courses or with the technology, they are very limited in the amount of on-Line support they can get. Although some subjects have on-line support, this support is NOT keeping pace with the quantity of students taking on-Line classes or the number of teachers teaching on-line classes..
We must not only teach & support our students in course subjects, we must also teach & support students & faculty to learn efficiently, to ask questions, not only in class, but on-line, and use on-Line resources. In today’s jobs – you must know how to keep learning new skills, and how to learn fast.
My support for unions is so that my voice can be combined with other teacher’s voices. Teachers can speak with a United Voice, and that our United Faculty voice be used in the College’s Governance.
I believe our United Faculty Voice is fundamental to the health of the Community College of Vermont and the Vermont State College & University system.
