In 1st Grade, students use IMSE-OG to build strong foundational reading skills. They learn phonemic awareness, letter-sound relationships, phonics patterns, syllable types, and strategies for reading and spelling words. Through systematic, multisensory instruction, students develop the skills and confidence needed to become successful readers and writers.
Red Words
Red Words are high-frequency words that students learn to recognize and spell using explicit, multisensory instruction. Students learn which parts of each word follow regular phonics patterns and which parts are “red” because they must be remembered. This approach helps build automatic word recognition, spelling skills, and reading fluency.
Throughout first grade, students build on their phonics knowledge by learning and practicing concepts such as:
Short vowels – CVC words such as cat, bed, pig, hot, and sun
Consonant blends – bl, st, tr, nd, mp, etc.
Digraphs – sh, ch, th, wh, ck, and ph
Long-vowel patterns – silent e words such as cake, these, bike, home, and cute
Vowel teams – patterns such as ai, ay, ee, ea, oa, and ow
Inflectional endings – -s, -es, -ed, and -ing
Compound words – sunshine, bedroom, and rainbow
Contractions – can’t, don’t, I’m, and we’re
Two-syllable words and common syllable patterns
