Hello Educators,

I hope you enjoyed a restful summer and a smooth start to the new school year! My name is Heather Curran, and I am the new manager for the Playwriting Program at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). To promote the Playwriting Program’s mission of encouraging and amplifying student voice, the Education Department of the DCPA is thrilled to invite you to participate in our FREE, 60-minute playwriting workshop(s) for the 2024-25 Middle and High School Playwriting Competition.

These playwriting workshops and the competition are an excellent way to inspire creativity and nurture middle school and high school writers. Our Colorado standards-based workshops are taught by industry professionals and DCPA Education Teaching Artists to support the activation of students’ unique point of view and creative self-expression.

Workshops can be scheduled between Sept. 9 – Nov. 29, 2024, with the deadline for play submissions on Saturday, Dec. 7 at midnight. 

Middle School:

Language arts, theatre, and any interested classrooms are encouraged to schedule the FREE, 60-minute workshop on playwriting fundamentals. Designed specifically for middle school, the workshop introduces an overview of writing for the stage through active, engaging, and student-centered writing prompts that prepare students to submit a ten-minute play. 

High School:
For high school Drama and Language Arts classrooms, we offer two, 60-minute FREE workshops to support students in writing a one-act play:

• The Fundamentals of Writing a One-Act Play

• Exploring Character Through Dialogue

Teachers can schedule one or both workshops. We also offer a playwriting residency with additional workshops that coincide with a classroom assignment where each student must submit their plays to the Middle School or High School Playwriting competition.
