Homework

Why do we assign homework?

Research on homework indicates that homework should be approached not as an afterthought to the school day, but as a focused strategy for increasing understanding. Daily homework practice means students are engaged in applying what they’ve learned during the school day. The goal of repeated practice is to get students as close to mastery of skills and concepts as possible.

Types of homework: The two types of homework that will be assigned are as follows:

Homework Expectations:

    • Monthly - Independent reading projects.

    • Bi-Monthly - Literacy

    • Daily - Math

    • Absentee expectations - No homework assignments will be given prior the student’s absence. A student has 2 days to make up work every day missed.

1. Practice assignments – To reinforce acquired skills

2. Extension activities – such as project work. Students will apply previous learning to complete these assignments

Homework that your student will be assigned will meet one of the two purposes listed above. Homework will also be aligned with the standards-based report card utilized at Bradford Primary.

Students will have an average of 30 - 40 minutes of homework Monday through Thursday. Math homework will be assigned daily to reflect that days learning.

  1. Homework assignments will be communicated to students verbally in class and when possible be posted in Google Classroom. (exception is math homework.)

2. Third grade students will be assigned 30 - 40 minutes of homework four nights each week.

3. Students learn to read by reading. Thus, it is our expectation that students will read independently for 15 minutes nightly. This time will be included in the 30 minutes.

4. Students are expected to complete their homework independently. Parents should facilitate completion, not teach content. Our goal is to help students become independent thinkers and learners.

5. Homework will be checked daily. Students may be expected to make up missing assignments during recess time or during a choice activity time at the end of the week.
