The Jenkins County School System supports a robust Local Area Network (LAN) and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). A cutting edge infrastructure allows our students and staff access to network resources and internet resources with amazing speed and reliability. Much of the new infrastructure was acquired through the federal Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM ) grant, saving our school system from the financial burden of updating aging equipment. As part of the STEM initiative, JCSS has implemented a new wireless system that allows the safe operation of tablets, ipads and other mobile wireless devices, making internet resources more accessible to our students, staff and even guests that arrive to our campus.
Jenkins County High School and Middle School operate on a gigabit network with a 10G backbone across their wiring infrastructure. The WAN link to the Elementary School operates at gigabit speed and provides 100Mbps to the desktop for that school. Planning is underway to upgrade the Elementary School to a 10G backbone as well, with gigabit wired speeds. Wireless is also in the implementation phase for the Elementary School and is projected to be in place by the Fall 2012 school year. The encrypted network allows teachers and staff to access all needed materials from any and all locations while prohibiting unauthorized access. All buildings have shared Internet access across our switched network. Internet bandwidth for the 2011-2012 school year is 16Mbps, with plans to migrate to a full 50Mbps during the 2012-2013 school year. Upgrades and Internet access are paid with e-rate funding which provides a substantial discount to our school system.
Computer procurement and deployment is planned for in the System Improvement Plan and the 3-Year Technology Plan. These elements allow for a technology assessment to be made and appropriate actions to be implemented in order to address areas of weakness. The plans also outline the number of labs needed in a school, the number of computers in a classroom per grade level or content area and the software that will be used. The System Improvement Teams consist of school and system level administrators and classroom teachers in order to provide a reliable assessment of computer needs for each site. Purchasing and replacement of personal computing devices is the responsibility of the individual school administration, with recommendations being made by the Information Technology Department.
