This video above provides a brief overview of Service as Action in the IB Middle Years Programme
Service as Action (SasA) is an integral part of the MYP and of life at School at ISD. SasA starts in the classroom and extends beyond it. During your time in the MYP, you discover your place and role in communities, from your immediate family and school environment to the world at large. Throughout the MYP, you are encouraged to make connections between the things you learn at school and in your surroundings, as well as think about what you can give the community and the benefits the community can bring to you. Having gained awareness about the community, the next step is to take action and to become involved in SasA activities and projects.
Increase awareness of your strengths and areas for growth.
Undertake challenges that develop new skills.
Discuss, evaluate, and plan student-initiated activities.
Work collaboratively with others.
Persevere in action.
Develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism, and intercultural understanding.
Consider the ethical implications of your actions.
Increase awareness of your own strengths & areas for growth. You are an individual with various skills and abilities, some more developed than others. You can make choices about how you would like to grow and challenge yourself.
Undertake challenges that develop new skills. Challenges and new skills may be those not previously tried, those you haven't gained yet, and/or those that extend your current skills.
Discuss, evaluate, & plan student-initiated activities. The planning and then starting of an action should involve a discussion and evaluation of the What? Why? and How? of the project/activity.
Work collaboratively with others. Collaboration can be shown in many activities, including working with coaches, adults, and other students.
Persevere in action. Showing determination and commitment by attending activities regularly and accepting a share of the responsibility for dealing with problems that may arise.
Develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism, intercultural understanding. This could be getting involved in international projects but there are many ways to act locally or nationally.
Consider the ethical implications of your actions. Ethical decisions arise in almost any Service as Action activity by considering who and who will not benefit from your actions.
