3-Week 3: Sept. 20-24, 2021

Overview of the Week:

Reading: We began our Wonders book as well as continued to learn and model "why we read" and what it looks, sounds, and feels like to be an independent reader. We've practiced this both inside as well as outside as we build our stamina with "good fit" books of our own.

Writing: Similar to reading we are learning "why we write" and what it looks, sounds, and feels like to be independent as a writer. This too was practiced both inside and outside while building stamina. Students are encouraged to write the sounds they hear. If they only hear the beginning sound, we start with that and build their confidence to write more sounds such as the ending or even middle sounds. At this point, when student write, I am not worrying about correct spelling. If your child asks you how to spell, encourage them by asking them to tell you the beginning sounds, any middle sounds and end sound.

Math: We have done garden math and used the tomatoes and beans harvested to create groups of 5 and some more. We are learning how to show proof with a circle drawing as well as the number sentence (equation) that matches. Our Math Expressions workbook pages look very similar to the math worksheet that came home on Thursday as homework. We'll be doing more garden math next week and I am in need of volunteers for that next week as I would like to do some math and science rotations in the garden.

Science: We're learning about Ways we learn and how to investigate and record our observations using detailed pictures (ones with "extra oomph") and labels. Students are learning how to use our class magiscopes to study their seeds and see the extra details and varieties of seeds collected.

Social Studies: I have introduced Ojibwe culture as a way to introduce some of the standards we will be covering about needs and wants, trade-offs, problem solving and engineering. Simultaneously I can introduce time lines and history and connect it with an important era in this region-the fur trade. I encouraged students to go to the Lester River Rendezvous this Sat. Sept. 25. It is a fun, family friendly event that also teaches about local history. We will be doing more next week and I am even planning our own Rendezvous later in the week. This is a volunteer opportunity that I hope will work into people's schedules. Other: We also reviewed bus safety this week.

Picture Day: Tuesday September 28. Forms were sent home this week and you can also do them online.

Volunteer Request: If you are interested in volunteering in the afternoon for either at the garden or our off-campus walking field trip. I will need help from 11:50-12:50 and 11:50-1:20. Please email me with days you are available. Based on the availability of volunteers, I will determine the best day for each activity. We can do them any day next week although Monday may be tough to plan. I will be in contact with more details for those who can help. Thank you!
