Early Childhood Screening

While all young children grow and change at their own rate, some children experience delays in their development. Special health conditions may affect children's development, too. Accessing early intervention services as early as possible will ensure the best developmental outcomes for these children.

If you have a child that is 3 years old to age 5 or beginning Kindergarten that has not had an early childhood screening, please contact the Fosston Screening Coordinator by calling 218-435-6036. In order for any child to start kindergarten in Minnesota's public schools, (s)he must participate in an early childhood screening. Screening includes vision, hearing, height, weight, speech/language, motor, cognitive and social-emotional development. Screening if free to all families.

General Screening Info

Minnesota law requires documentation of Early Childhood Screening prior to enrollment in kindergarten. Screening is an early look at a child's development and is conducted by qualified professionals to help identify specific needs a child may have in these areas: fine and gross motor skills; speech and language development; cognitive and social development; vision and hearing; height and weight; immunizations.

This screening should be completed at least one year before the child enters kindergarten. This service is provided at no cost to the family for all children who reside within Fosston School District boundaries.

Fosston Public Schools recommends that children be screened at age 3, but call at any time if you are concerned about your child's growth and development - screening can be done before age 3.

Three reasons to screen at age 3:

  1. Screening can assist your child to be ready for school.

  2. Any health or developmental concerns can be found earlier and help provided sooner.
