General Educational Development (GED) Test

In Minnesota, individuals who do not have a high school diploma may be able to earn a State of Minnesota GED Diploma by passing the General Educational Development Test. The four tests in the GED battery measure academic competencies similar to many of those required of a Minnesota high school graduate.

THE FOUR TESTS ARE:

  • REASONING THROUGH LANGUAGE ARTS

  • SOCIAL STUDIES

  • SCIENCE

  • MATH

Minnesota residents who are not currently enrolled in high school and are at least 19 nears of age (or at least 16 and have obtained an age waiver) are eligible to take the GED. You will also need a valid, current, government-issued photo ID card.

GED Preparation at Fosston School

Face to face instructional preparation is available at the Fosston High School.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) is available statewide at no cost to adult learners and is administered through the Minnesota Department of Education.

To be eligible for ABE services, a person must be 16 years old or older, not enrolled in K-12 public or private school and lack basic academic skills in one or more of the following areas: reading, writing, speaking and mathematics.

ABE programs offered in Minnesota include

  • Adult Diploma

  • GED (General Educational Developmental Diploma)

  • English as a Second Language (ESL or ELL)

  • Family Literacy

  • Basic Skills Enhancement (brush-up)

  • Workplace Readiness / Workforce enhancement

  • U.S. Citizenship/Civic Education

  • Family Literacy

Outcomes

Adult Basic Education addresses a variety of learner goals. ABE helps learners to:

  • Attain employment and/or better their current employment;

  • Achieve high school equivalency (GED or Adult H.S. Diploma);

  • Attain skills necessary to enter post-secondary education and training;

  • Exit public welfare and become self-sufficient;

  • Learn to speak and write the English language;

  • Master basic academic skills to help their children succeed in school;

  • Become U.S. citizens and participate in democratic society; and

  • Gain self-esteem, personal confidence and sense of personal and civic responsibility.
