2013 OTC Baseball begins practice

Despite the snow on the ground, the 2013 Ottertail Central Baseball spring practice has begun practicing inside with a solid returning nucleus from last seasons’ 11-9 team. Gone are All Conference, All-State and Lions All-star player Martin Charest and All State Academic and All Conference players Aaron Butler and Collin Teich. While these players will be greatly missed, this years team consists of many confident, talented and versatile players.

Expectations are very high this year, with Seniors Zach Torgerson, Zane Lind, Junior Jake Trosdahl and Sophomore Nick Trosdahl leading the way for the Bulldogs. Torgerson, Lind, and Nick Trosdahl will work a rotation within the infield, while Jake Trosdahl will see spot starts in the middle infield and the outfield when he is not on the mound. Nolan Koch has been competing for an infield position and is able to fill a spot in the outfield as well. Weston Malmstrom and Brandon DeBauche will compete for one of the outfield positions as well as push for an infield position.

Cole Eitzen and Alec Mattson return for their senior years to fill key positions at the infield and outfield, respectively. Mattson may also be expected to fill the designated hitter role and see some time at the Catcher position. Junior newcomer Andrew Smith brings some more athleticism to this year’s squad and should be able to compete for some playing time in the outfield.

Sophomores Micah Rogness and Tyler Aune should fill key positions for this year’s team as they are both very versatile players. Senior Joey Tigges, Juniors Tarin Terry and Lance Lee round out this years roster and should add some depth to the lineup.

Aune and Rogness have been competing hard to fill the Catchers position along with Mattson and a couple freshmen. Someone will have to step up their game, become the frontrunner and take the responsibility to lead this year's pitching staff.

The 2013 starting pitching staff should be very deep, anchored by Torgerson and Lind as well as the Trosdahl brothers. The Bulldogs bring a lot of baseball experience to the mound. Juniors Koch, Malmstrom and DeBauche will come out of the bullpen to generate depth as well as do some spot starting.

“In the game of baseball, pitching and defense are key and we should be able to put together a very solid defensive lineup but our hitting will be expected to come through for us this year. We have competition at every position for the first time in many years so this lineup will be tough to crack and we will need it with the tough schedule ahead of us.”

"While this years team is very talented at the upper class grade levels, this year's freshmen and sophomore classes have been pressing for playing time and several could see some time at the varsity level."

The 2013 B-squad team should be very fun to watch as well, with three experienced sophomores and twelve solid freshmen, most of whom played on last summer’s Babe Ruth State Tournament team. Key players on this team include Zac Lind, Carl Colburn, Noah Minten, Jarrett Werner, Kolby Thalmann, Zach Rilla, Samuel Naddy, Jakob Bradsteen, Andrew VanErp, Cole Kugler, Adam Thormandson, Justin Masloski, Dylan Kalenze, Joey Hjelmstad and Caleb Bellig, This years B-squad team, as with most, brings some new talent to the field in Vance Doll and Travis Turchin. Brian Fitzgerald will once again lead the B-squad team while Grady Kirk and Jason Rogers will coach the 7th and 8th grade squads.
