Future Planning- Career & College

In the DRHS Counseling Dept. we define college as a school you attend after high school that offers a degree or certificate.  Post-Secondary training is any formal training you get beyond high school.

OPTIONS FOR COLLEGE/POST-SECONDARY TRAINING

College: A type of school you attend after high school that offers a degree . 4-year universities are often referred to as a “college”.  

University: A type of school you attend after high school that offers a degree and a wide variety of majors.  Universities are often referred to as a “college”.

Technical College: Colleges that offer employment courses and programs which teach specific knowledge and skills leading to certain jobs.

Community College: Schools that prepare students for certain jobs or to transfer to a four-year college.

Military Service: Joining the Army, navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard or Coast Guard . This can earn you money to pay for college or be a pathway into a full-time military career or career training that transfers to civilian career.

Apprenticeship: Customized and hands-on, apprenticeships allow you to learn and earn. Your wages increase as you master job-specific skills through classroom and on-the-job training. Apprenticeships offer rewarding careers and flexible work/life balance.

We strive to support students in determining what type of college or training is appropriate for their career ambitions and goals.  The goal is to help students navigate the application process and help with steps to transition to post-secondary training.
