π is the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of any circle. It is an irrational number which means that its decimal is non-terminating and non-repeating. It has been calculated to over 2 trillion digits. The world record for memorizing digits of pi is 67,890.
There are many amazing things to know about pi. Here are a few of my favorites:
1 + 1/22 + 1/32 + 1/42 + . . . = π2/6
1 + 1/24 + 1/34 + 1/44 + . . . = π4/90
Buffon's Needle Problem: If you drop a needle onto a set of lines spaced one needle length apart, the probability of the needle touching a line is 2/π. This means you can do a simulation to get an estimate for the value of pi. You might need to do a large number of trials to get a good estimate!
