BHS Girls Badminton FAQ
Racquets
- for the moment, we are able to provide racquets. However, we are fine with you buying your own racquets. We purchase ours from HL Badminton. Racquets can cost from $45 on up, so be aware of what you're looking for. We also don't have re-stringing equipment, so if your strings break, the racquet may need to be replaced. Unlike tennis racquet re-stringing, badminton re-stringers are difficult to find in our area.
Practice wear
- your P. E. clothes will work fine. Be sure you have shoes that have good ankle support. Badminton is a sport with a lot of stopping and starting, so a turned ankle can occur.
Uniforms
- we have no set uniforms. Every year players purchase a t-shirt that we use as our uniform for matches, but it is yours to keep. We try to keep the cost minimal. We also ask for a specific color of shorts for matches. The captains will determine that color in our early meetings, but we try to choose from BHS colors, so if you own a pair of black, gold or white shorts, you're probably fine.
Practices
- once the weather allows, we don't have to share the gym with baseball and softball and can practice at 2:45 after school. Until that time, we will go at various times alternating with the basketball, baseball and softball teams. We will have a schedule for the early practices, but if weather allows the outdoor sports to practice regularly outdoors, our practice time defaults to the after school time regardless of what our practice schedule reads. It can be confusing, but we try to give as much warning as possible.
- attending practices is very important. Unlike many sports with off-season programs, we do not have that luxury. Our practice time is spent on teaching and reinforcing the fundamentals. At times, it can seem monotonous, but without that foundation, it is difficult to improve. If you miss practice for an unexcused reason, you may lose your spot on the "ladder" and not be able to challenge back for quite some time, or at all if challenges are done for the season. If you miss 3 times unexcused, you may be removed from the team.
Teams
- we have four squads - a Varsity, Junior Varsity 1, Junior Varsity 2, and an Exhibition squad if needed. The varsity and junior varsity teams consist of 4 singles and 3 doubles each. When we go on road matches to other schools; normally we will take the Varsity, JV1 and JV2, but sometimes we are unable to because the school we play may not have enough members on their team. The Exhibition squad only plays at home matches.
Singles or Doubles?
- ultimately, the coaches will determine the line-ups. We want all our players to start in singles so that they learn the court and the shots before being considered for a doubles team.
If you want to play, be sure to fill out and turn in the athletic participation forms available online at https://isd191-ar.rschooltoday.com/ . You cannot play until the paperwork clears, so the earlier you do so, the better.
