Welcome to the CHS Summer Theater Workshops!
Chaska High School Theater & Thespian Troupe 6517 are proud and excited to offer the second iteration of our Summer Theater Workshops!
These workshops are designed to introduce students to a wide range of topics in theater, from performance and technical theater to playwriting and others! These FREE workshops are open to ALL current CHS and CNHS students (including incoming freshmen), and no previous theater experience is expected or required!
NOTE: All workshops will LIKELY be held at Chaska High School, pending completion of HVAC work in the building. Specific locations will be emailed to workshop participants separately.

Monday, August 11, 2025 from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM
DESCRIPTION: Led by Twin Cities director and educator Mike Ricci, this workshop will cover the fundamental aspects of auditioning, from monologue selection, preparation, rehearsal and performance. In addition, we will be covering presentation, overall presence in the audition room, interviewing, and audition protocols. We will also be covering cold readings and what to look for in the short amount of time you’re usually given to prepare them. Gaining confidence and allowing your true self to shine through will be the focus of the work we will be doing. Participants are encouraged to bring in any monologues they may currently be using or working on.

DESCRIPTION: Led by Twin Cities director and educator Mike Ricci, this workshop will focus on how to read a script and what to look for, including ‘given circumstances’ (who, what , when, where, why, how), and character relationships, moments of change and character arcs. We will also focus on how to make specific choices for a character, and physicalizing those choices, putting the words into action. Participants are encouraged to bring in any scenes or plays they may be currently working on.

DESCRIPTION: Come learn the fundamentals of sound design and QLab software for live theatre! From analyzing a written script to procuring sound effects to playing the design through QLab, this workshop will show you how to process works from start to finish.
Activities will include:
-Analyzing a scene or short story for creating a concept for the overall sound design
-Introducing students to online resources for sound effects and music to use in their designs
-Showing students the basics of programming a design in QLab, the industry standard software for sound designs in live theatre
-Practicing executing sound designs in real time by accompanying live script readers
Thursday, August 14, 2025 from 12:00-2:00pm
DESCRIPTION: This interactive workshop introduces students to the exciting world of theatre lighting. Aimed at beginners, the session explores how lighting helps tell stories on stage—setting mood, time of day, location and focus. Students will get hands-on experience with basic lighting equipment and learn how to safely hang and focus a light.
What Students Will Learn:
Introduction to common theatre lights
Parts of a lighting instrument
Lighting Accessories
Basic Scrip Analysis for lighting design
How to safely hang, focus, and operate lights
Basic lighting angles / positions
Using color gels to enhance mood and storytelling
Fundamentals of lighting control and cueing for school shows
Ideal For:
High school drama students, backstage crew members, or anyone interested in theatre tech and design. No prior experience required!
