Do I have to be in the theater class to audition?

Nope! There are no pre-requisites for auditioning for a show. 

Do I have to sing? 

If you are auditioning for the musical, yes. We need to get an idea of your voice.

You do not need to sing for auditions for the one act or the spring play. 

What will I have to prepare?

• For the musical, you typically need to prepare 16-32 measures of a musical theater song, plus learn the choreography for the dance audition. (No worries--we teach that at a dance camp.) If you want to be considered for a speaking role, you also need to prepare a 30-60 second monologue. 

• For the one act and the spring play, preparations vary. Sometimes you may be asked to choose and prepare your own monologue; other times you may be given a cutting from the script and asked to prepare that. The audition materials for each show will specify what the director would like you to prepare. 

What happens at the audition?

When you arrive at the audition, you greet the stage manager outside the theater and give them your audition form (which you can find and print on the Audition Info page). 

Auditions are done in 30 minute sessions with up to 10 students in each session. When it is your session's turn, the stage manager will bring you into the theater and bring your audition forms to the director(s). 

• For a musical audition, you'll begin with the dance. All auditioners will go up on stage and perform the dance combo together as a group. You'll likely be arranged into two lines and each line will take a turn being the front row. After the dance portion, everyone will sit down and we'll call people up one at a time to present their song (and monologue, if prepared). Once we see everyone, the director(s) will provide some information about next steps. Then, you're done!

What if I'm nervous?

Being nervous is totally normal! Even the most experienced performers still get nervous for auditions. The best way to calm your nerves is to practice breathing exercises and visualize yourself completely nailing your audition! 

If your nerves impede your audition, don't worry. We completely understand and will do our best to help you find a way to share your audition in a more calming environment. 

Can I audition if I don't think I'm very good? 

Absolutely! Our job and our goal is to teach you and help you improve. Everyone has to start somewhere and this is the perfect place to start! 

Which roles are available?

Can I audition for a specific role? 

Yes. There is a space on the audition form to list any specific roles you're interested in. You can also specify whether you prefer to play male-presenting roles, female-presenting roles, or both. 

What if I can't attend the audition?

If you know ahead of time that you cannot attend the scheduled audition times, please reach out to the director of that production as soon as you can. Directors are willing to work with you on a scheduling conflict if you let us far enough in advance. 

What if I don't get the role I wanted?

It happens, and it doesn't feel great. But don't let this stop you from being in the show! There is so much to learn and so many ways to grow in theater--who knows what you'll learn from this experience?

Also, the directors value students who have a positive attitude, accept feedback, demonstrate flexibility, contribute to a collaborative environment, and are focused on learning and growing. We pay attention to those traits no matter what role you are in. Help us see you shine in this role and that will help you down the road. 

How much time does being in a production take?

It varies by production.

• Musical rehearsals are typically scheduled between 3:00-6:00pm Monday thru Friday. We also schedule dance rehearsals on Saturdays from 9:00-11:30am. During the first half of the rehearsal period (September thru mid-October), rehearsals are split between music, dance, and acting, which means not all students will be called every day and not all students will be called for the full rehearsal time. Once we return from Fall Break in October, we start running the full show, so the full cast is frequently required for the full rehearsal period each day. 

•  One act and spring play rehearsals are typically scheduled between 3:00-6:00pm Monday thru Friday. In the beginning, rehearsals are divided by scenes, which means not all students will be called every day and not all students will be called for the full rehearsal time. 

• Tech & Dress Rehearsals: Once we are about two weeks away from opening night, weekday rehearsals can run from 3:00pm until 8:00 or 9:00pm and weekend rehearsals are more common.

• Specific schedules for each production are determined by the director(s) and are distributed by the first week of rehearsal. 

When will the cast be announced? 

The cast list is typically posted here on the Theater website on the Current Production page. The director(s) typically post it the weekend following callbacks.
