At the Middle School - Percussion students at the Middle School are given the opportunity to begin their musical journey by signing up for band, orchestra, or chorus.
Starting in 6th grade, students and teachers will come together to find the instrument that best suits the students capabilities and interests. All woodwind and brass students take private lessons during the school with Mr. Wiley or Mrs. Zehr in 6th grade and will transition to lessons with Mr. Goloski in 7th and 8th grade. All Percussionists will take lessons once a cycle with Ms. Trudell.
Percussion students will study with Ms. Trudell through their whole percussion studies at Indian River! During their early years of playing, goals will be set for each student to achieve, and the outcomes will include various performing opportunities throughout the school district and community. Students will be learn how to read and perform music in an ensemble or as a soloists. Students will also be working on their organizational, research,, communication, social skills, and many other concepts that will help them in their everyday lives.
All students will be in one of the Middle School Bands.
Some students will be part of Instrumental lessons before taking part in the school band. Students will only be allowed into band with Mr. G or Mr. W approval.
At the High School- Students will continue (or begin) their percussion studies with Ms. Trudell at the High School. Some woodwind and brass students will also take lessons on their primary instruments with Ms. Trudell. All other students will take their lessons with Mr. Heck. Those students will follow a similar curriculum to Mr. Heck's students.
During the High School years, students will continue to develop their musical performing abilities. There will be many performing opportunities for them to take part in (Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Stage Band, CNY Percussion All-Stars,, NYSSMA solo fest, Marching Band, Pep Band, Bi-County/Area All State Festivals, and other ensembles at the high school). Students will also continue to develop their research, communication, social, and performing skills.
Each student will have an individualized experience in lessons. Curricular goals are individualized to students wants and capabilities. Each student is assessed individually.
