5V Math

My math class looked like this last year, and I anticipate something similar for this year:

Students will begin the class with a challenge problem that makes them consider the use and application of a specific problem solving strategy. They will then view each other's work, make comments, or ask questions while visiting tables. A couple of students and then the teacher will provide modeling of thinking. Students then will take a pre-survey so that they can "choose their path" during class. I will get the results and guide them in decision making for their path. They may opt for repeated practice to gain conceptual understanding of the mathematics for that day(s) or they may opt to enrich themselves by attempting more challenging content within that math standard or even outside of it. Or, they may opt to watch video lessons and try practice problems. I will do my modeling and teaching in a 1:1 coaching format (maybe some small groups), and then I will punctuate class with a modeling of my thinking. Homework will be served at the end of the period.
