Unit 7: Geometry and Measurement Word Problems
The main focus of this unit is an intensive practice with word problems, as well as hands-on investigation experiences with geometry and perimeter.
Essential Questions:
- How can we determine the attributes of different polygons?
- How can we determine the perimeter of polygons?
Essential Understandings:
- Students will understand that polygons have different attributes.
- Students will understand the different strategies for finding perimeter.
- Students will understand that rectangles with the same perimeter can have different areas or that rectangles with the same area can have different perimeters.
- Students will understand data can be organized, presented, and interpreted in multiple ways for a variety of purposes.
Skills the students will learn:
- Compare polygons and their attributes.
- Apply their basic understanding of perimeter of real world contexts.
- Determine the perimeter of a figure when whole number side length measurements are unknown.
- Measure side lengths and calculate perimeters.
- Use all four operations to solve one- and two- step word problems.
Vocabulary/Concepts:
- Vocabulary- Quadrilaterals, Polygon, Regular Polygon, Perimeter, Area
- Different shapes have shared attributes.
- Strategies for finding the perimeter.
