Unit 3: Multiplication & Division 0, 1, 6-10, and Multiples of 10
This unit's main focus is multiplication and division and solving problems with units 0,1,6-9, and multiples of 10. The students will know the relationship between multiplication and division. They will be able to use manipulatives and pictures to solve a variety of problems. Knowing their facts fluently is an ongoing skill. Story problems are used for multiplication and division throughout the unit.
Essential Questions:
- What tools and models can I use to solve and represent multiplication and division problems?
- How can I use multiplication and division strategies to solve the known and unknown?
- How do I determine which operations to use to solve a problem?
Essential Understandings:
- Students will understand there is an inverse relationship between multiplication and division.
- Students will understand there are multitudes of strategies to solve and represent multiplication/division problems.
- Students will understand there are patterns when using the four operations.
- Students will use place value understanding to perform multi-digit arithmetic.
Skills students will learn:
- Interpreting products of whole numbers as a total number of objects in a number of groups.
- Explaining what division means and how it relates to equal shares.
- Interpreting quotients as the number of shares or the number of groups when a set of objects is divided equally.
- Solving word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities.
- Representing a word problem using a picture, and equation with a symbol for the unknown number, or in other ways.
- Determining which operation (multiplication or division) is needed to determine the unknown number.
- Solving to find the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation.
- Explaining how the properties of operations work.
