Chitra Joshi

Chitra Joshi took her M.A. at the Centre for Historical Studies in the Jawaharlal Nehru University, and obtained a Ph.D. in history of labour from this University in 1981.

She has been actively engaged in writing and researching on Indian labour history. Her publications include, Lost Worlds: Indian Labour and its Forgotten Histories (New Delhi: Permanent Black, 2003 & London: Anthem Press, 2005), and various book chapters and essays in reputed journals. Her current research is on the history of roads and labour (late 18th and 19th centuries) in the making of colonial modernity, and on histories of work in contemporary India using ethnographic and oral sources.

She is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the Indraprastha College for Women, and has held visiting positions at CEMIS, University of Goettingen, and at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. She has held awards from the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, Charles Wallace Trust, and SSRC South Asia Regional Fellowship.
