Paola Montone website

Paola Montone is a chief scientist at Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), since 2003. Her current research is focused on present-day stress field, seismotectonics, drillings, and earthquake geology. She is author of more than 130 publications.

She studies the crustal stress field using borehole breakout data, focal mechanism of earthquakes and active fault data. She is involved in geological and geophysical researches also through deep drilling boreholes (Antarctica). She performed a 350m deep drilling in a volcanic region close to Rome city. She works on structural geology and drawing up of geological maps, with the collection and analyses of structural and geological data at the various scales, mainly published on peer-reviewed Italian Journals.

She is involved in: seismotectonic studies to characterize seismogenic sources; earthquake geology analysis; paleo- and neotectonic stress field reconstruction in the field; stress data analysis and seismotectonic zonation applied to the probability of earthquake occurrence.

She is a member of Core Team Member of World Stress Map "WSM core team members"

She is responsible of scientific teams and coordinator in research projects with funds from national and international scientific institutions. She is member of the "Operating Committee of Civil Protection" for the operational management of emergencies.

Among other commitments, she has served as: responsible of “Geology and Geotechnologies Laboratory Unit” and responsible of “Geology  Unit” of the INGV Earthquake Department; member of “INGV Crisis Management Unit” for seismic emergency; member of the bilateral Civil Protection Department - INGV Commission; member of seismological scientific board relatively to DPC-INGV Projects; Italian member of Executive Committee of ICDP with the function of program management and operation, including project prioritization and budget allocation; member of Emergeo scientific board (INGV earthquake emergency geology group).

She is awarded of the National Scientific Qualification to function as Full Professor (competition sector 04/A4: Geophysics and sector 04/A2: Structural Geology), in Italian University.
