8th Grade Language Arts

In Language, we focus on grammar and writing throughout the year. Sentence structure, verbals, prepositions, capitalization, and punctuation are all topics to be covered in our Grammar lessons. Students will then apply this information to create formal and informal writings on different topics.

Students will be pairing assignments periodically in Science, Reading, and History with the ELA class to make their writing assignments more detailed and content specific. We will be pairing with Mrs. Lewis and the Science Expo Project throughout the year as well. The Science Expo Project will be worked on throughout the school year, but will be very important to the students' ELA and Science grades during 4th quarter. It is important that students remain up-to-date with their Science Expo assignments throughout the year, so they are not behind when we work on compiling their report during the 4th quarter.

We will also be studying Poetry, reading Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, I Am Malala: Young Readers Edition, and Lion: A Long Way Home. Through these topics the students will create poetry of their own, create an informative essay about someone who compares to Malala, and an analytical essay comparing Anne Frank, Malala and Lion. The goal throughout the year is to build upon information that was learned in previous years and to continually improve the students' written expression.

Below are pictures of the covers of 2 of the books that we will be reading in Language Arts class this year. I do have books for students to use while we are reading them in class; however, I highly recommend purchasing the book so that you/your child can write in the book, make notes, highlight, etc. while we read and discuss the books in class. We will be starting with I Am Malala: Young Readers Edition in about October and Diary of a Young Girl: Anne Frank around January.
